The Students Council at WSB-NLU sent two petitions to protect the right for democratic elections in Belarus. One petition was addressed to Aleksander Lukashenko and it called for another, this time truly democratic elections. The other petition was sent to the European Parliament urging it to offer tangible support to the Belarus opposition movement.
On Monday, March 27, 2006, WSB-NLU students met with Ilona Karpiuk, the chair of the Belarus Students Union and with Radosław Dąbrowski, one of the BSU members in Poland. Ilona and Radek presented the contemporary political situation in Belarus, talked about arrests, persecution, censorship and propaganda. ‘Before the elections, all opposition web sites had been blocked, and radio programs broadcast by the two independent radio stations (from Poland and Germany) were successfully jammed. All opposition journalists were arrested. We could only show our protest by organizing demonstrations,’ said Ilona.
The hall of building C also housed the exhibition showing photographs from students demonstrations in Belarus.
Krzysztof Pawłowski, WSB-NLU Rector, founded five scholarships for Belarus students who were expelled from their universities due to their involvement and participation in the protests in Minsk.
