WSB-NLU has established one of the most technologically advanced networks in the region of southern Poland. Students are provided with access to ten computer labs equipped with modern computer hardware. Six of these computer laboratories have been created with support of OPTIMUS S.A. Company. The laboratories are furnished with new computer workstations OPTIMUS SMART with the Pentium 4 processors 1500 MHZ and 256 MB RAM. All computer hardware is compliant with the PC 2000 standards introduced by Intel and Microsoft companies, as well as has been connected to the Internet network. In the hallways of two campus buildings a range of common use terminals has been put up for students to check their electronic mail and gain instant access to the Internet & Intranet.
Apart from regular computer classes, students may also take adavantage of two additional computer laboratories available on all-week days from 8.00 a.m. till midnight. The labs have been equipped with seventeen desktop computers with Pentium II processors, network laser printers, a scanner and a CDR-drive.
Available software
Students are able to use standard operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT 4.0 and Linux. A wide range of applications is available: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook), Microsoft Project; programming environment: Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual C++, Visual Basic), Borland C++, Java, MS SQL Server; DTP tools: Corel Draw, Gimp, POV-Ray; Mathematica; Web browsing tools: Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer and many more.
From October 2004 standard operating systems in computer labs will be Windows XP i Windows Server 2003.
Student accounts
Each student is entitled to three accounts:
an account on the internet server venus (for email, WWW, ftp, scp, ssh, ssl),
an account to access the local network in the domain Windows NT called WSB,
an account to access the intranet.
Students' e-mail accounts are granted indefinitely. The standard account's capacity oscillates around 12 MB.
Network structure
The WSB-NLU's local computer network has been designed to constitute an internal communication system between five School's educational facilities and two in-town settled dormitories. Each building has been integrated into the network through installing high-tech single or multi-mode optical fiber connections. The overall length of utilized optical fiber wiring exceeds three kilometers. The network's structure has the capability of supporting transfers of 1000 megabits/s being constructed with an application of latest network hardware solutions introduced by Cisco and 3Com companies. Such a configuration of the network facilitates considerably transfers of large multimedia files, as well as allows the establishment of internal virtual networks. The network as a whole is made up of 450 access points. Currently a group of over 350 computers is directly operating within the network, as the overall number of registered user accounts mounts up to 13000.
The local network operates under ubiquitous surveillance of fourteen servers with different operating systems making it more convenient for all users to work within the network. Access to the Internet via the local network is maintained through the connection to the POLPAK-T network with an average transfer rate of nearly 4 Mbs/s using the Frame-Relay protocol.
More information on the network's infrastructure can be obtained from the web-site of WSB-NLU Computer Center.
