Sport

For a few years now, WSB-NLU has had its own excellent sports facilities that consist of a complex of football pitches, basketball and volleyball courts, and tennis courts; a fitness club center with a gym and a small general workout room and two covered halls adjusted to playing tennis and indoor sports. In the campus-based facilities students are offered a wide variety of sports activities to improve their skills and general fitness. Since October 2001, Physical Education is a compulsory subject treated as equal to any college subject in the curriculum. The compulsory Physical Education classes that take place during the first and second year of study where students can choose from volleyball, basketball, football, handball, recreational workout like step, modern dance, aerobic etc., tennis, body-building and swimming and, thanks to Nowy Sącz location in the region of excellent tourist attractions, it is possible to organize events like hiking and skiing trips.

The activities organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports are supplemented by activities of the local Academic Sports Association (AZS). The AZS comprises a number of sports clubs specializing in different sports such as men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s handball, football (soccer), tennis, table tennis, martial arts, sport dance, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding and badminton. The clubs are dedicated to promote sports on campus, to create professional teams and to prepare them for participation in league games and national contests organized by AZS as well as to organize sports activities on campus e.g., WSB-NLU indoor football league that is very popular among students.
The undoubted success of WSB-NLU sports representatives has been participation in the finals of Polish championships of non-state colleges in volleyball. During the last finals, organized in Szczecin in 2001, the women’s team won a bronze medal and men’s team classified on the fourth position. Moreover, both teams compete each year in the league games organized by the Volleyball Association. WSB-NLU students have also participated in the Nowy Sącz Open International Championships in swimming and in the Nowy Sącz Championships in Skiing, in several finals of championships of non-state colleges in indoor football, in tennis tournaments, and Polish finals in basketball as well as in the AZS Cups in skiing and snowboarding. During the last University Olympic Games, WSB-NLU was represented by Wojciech Pająk who won a silver in half-pipe. We are proud of our first league women’s handball team that another season competes to qualify among the best Polish teams. Encouraged by their example, we have started preparing a men’s team which, we hope, will be ready to play in the next season

...apart from the time spent on the lectures and studying, WSB-NLU offers many possibilities of recreation e.g. sports. Furthermore, the students has the opportunity to take part in several sport sections...
